how to respond to the following - When looking at Pay for Performance one could peel away all the layers to reveal its underlying concepts of intrinsic reward (pride self-worth individualism) and extrinsic which I believe to be the biggest factor in pay for performance (what is in it for me, money, power). When looking at a company like the one I work for (retail) I would need to take a step back and look at how it could operate any other way than Pay for Performance and I cannot. We need teamwork yes, but each group needs a distinct person in charge and a person that has the most to gain or lose from everyone's performance. If we were not to have this model everyone would be thinking 9 to 5 and heading home, who would still be thinking of better ways or what's going on if there is not benefit for the individual. Not many. That being the case when I think of something like a software development company which operates much more in a whole team environment allows me to easily imagine how the pitfalls could come into play with such a system as pay for performance
