Who are the stakeholders in this and how might they be affect by Apple's decision? What decision benefits the greatest number of these stakeholders? Post: The stakeholders in this situation are Apple, the FBI, the government, and the general public. By not compromising the security of information, Apple will uphold user protection and privacy. Although the risk of government retaliation for not cooperating creating a permanent opening that would enable access to anyone's phone, the benefit openhanding customer and supplier base. With this case, there is disagreement with the parameters of this test. The FBI is charged with the rights and duties to protect the United States and its citizens; however, if given a revolving door of access, there would be no protection and security for personal iPhone information...that goes against fairness and justice. It would be like punishing all of your children for them is behavior of one A decision that benefits the greatest number of these stakeholders would be to comply with the FBI's request and unlock the iPhone. This would allow the FBI to access any potentially important information that could be used to prevent a terrorist attack and the government to protect its citizens, while also not drawing negative attention to Apple and its brand. I agree with the decision that utilitarianism leads me to, as it seems to be the best option for the greatest number of stakeholders. It also ensures that Apple is following the law and providing the FBI with the information they need. Rights brings an obligation with it and Duties are moral obligations. When one person has a right, others are under moral obligation to respect it, and all are under moral obligation to use it for the common good. Being treated as one deserves is essential for justice and fairness. Individual differences are at the base to our questions of justice or fairness as everyone has their own values and beliefs. (Week 2 Learning Resources, 2023) Applying the tests in Rights and Duties or Fairness and Justice does not lead to a different answer. It is important to take into consideration the rights of the individual (in this case, the terrorist) but also the collective rights of the public that are affected by potential terrorist attacks. This decision is ultimately based on the best outcome for the greatest number of people, which is to provide the FBI with the information they need to prevent a possible attack. References
