You're the account manager on an account which recently appointed a new advertising manager who fancies himself a creative expert. He is consistently writing headlines, rewriting copy, and dictating the art direction, much to your dismay and that of the creative team. You've been unable to stop this combination of creative ego and excessive client power. But, for the moment, the new ad manager seems happy with the agency's execution of his heavily reworked ads. Seeing that his creative stars are getting frustrated, the creative director of your agency reassigns the senior creative team to other accounts and puts a relatively new team on this account. When asked to explain his action, the CD says he can't afford to have his senior creative people frustrated and why should you care anyway if the client is happy with his own ads? As an account manager, there are at least three big picture reasons you should be seriously concerned about this situation. Some of these reasons are internal to the agency and others external. Also, as an account manager, you are going to have to inform the client of this change in his account team. What is the best way to put a positive spin on the fact that a new, younger creative team is now working on his account? *Inspired by a case in How to Get the Best Work from Your Agency by Nancy Salz (2005)
