An SGM needs to constantly use assessments to improve the or "The two types of indicators commonly used in assessment include measures of performance (MOPs) and measures of effectiveness (MOEs)." (Department of the Army, 2019, p. 5-3) As a CSM or SGM, utilizing MOPs and MOEs can establish what works and be a highly useful tool for developing processes and procedures for Units.

The term also focused on the importance of servant leadership and followership, two critical components of a successful leader.
