You have set up the OSHA recordkeeping system, managed Hazard Communication requirements, started an emergency planning process, defined PPE needs, improved ergonomic programs, and have a good start on key risks such as lockout, confined space entry, bloodborne pathogens, machine safety and industrial hygiene. You even branched out to start managing security and wellness programs. But no rest for the weary! Your boss, Margaret Peoples, is looking into purchasing a Learning Management System (LMS) during the next fiscal year, and has asked that you put together a H&S Training Matrix. You are happy to do this, because you need to start scheduling the required H&S training for next year anyway. Module Notes Training is a key part of almost all OSHA standards. Any time the standard has requirements for employee performance of tasks, or where employees are to be made aware of certain risks to their health and safety; there will usually be a requirement for some level of training. Keeping up with the literally dozens of training requirements can be difficult. Some requirements require only initial training, some have periodic update training requirements, some are based on workplace changes. Maintaining a H&S Training Matrix is one way to keep track of these requirements. As you look through the "OSHA Training" folder in file, you find that the previous safety manager had at least started a matrix. The matrix lists various departments, groups and assignments on the left side, and has a list of potential required training listed along the top of the matrix. You can access the Training Matrix HERE. The matrix has a set of codes at the bottom; using these codes, indicate the training requirements for each group identified on the left. The requirements for the Admin staff have been filled in as an example. You may need to refer to the appropriate OSHA standard to determine the training requirements for each. Review previous modules that address the regulatory subject as well. The matrix lists some training areas for which there is no current regulatory requirement, such as ergonomics, so you can decide if you want to include training for those areas as a "desirable, but not required" category.
