HTTP protocol analysis:
a) What is the performance advantage of persistent HTTP over non-persistent HTTP?
b) Does the performance advantage apply to the first HTTP transaction to a server? Please briefly explain your answer.
c) Consider running HTTP over a LAN with a one-way end-to-end propagation delay = 1 ms, bandwidth = 100 Mbps, and size of requested web object = 1000 bytes. Please calculate the effective throughput for non-persistent HTTP assuming we only consider the transmission and propagation delay of the requested web object. We are ignoring the processing time delay and the transmission time delay associated with the HTTP request/response headers.
d) Please repeat (c) for persistent HTTP assuming the TCP connection is already set up. How much gain in effective throughput (in relative percentage terms) can be obtained via persistent HTTP?
