The author for this visualization addresses the audience in a straight forward and minimal way by using a bar graph, dot plot and a map style visualization. In addition to this the author has addressed the audience through providing written history. To make this wording more clear they have used red coloring to highlight the important words.

The purpose of the visualization is to help people understand the data and to communicate historical information. This is conveyed the best, in my opinion, through the use of the map visual. As most people know the general outline of the United States therefore creating a great visual of which states shows the day as a public holiday (red) and which one is not (black). How the author has done this also shows each state taking up equal amounts of space - making the data less bias. The historical part is conveyed in the written text, but also in the dot plot being shown as when each state did declare it as a public holiday, showing with states were trailblazers.

The visualization uses color in a minimal way with just black, red and light brown. Red is highlighting the statement 'a paid holiday' in the text which links to all three graphs/images. The visual uses order in a way that the audience naturally reads the headline, then will look down going from the bar graph with the least data, then the map which expands on the bar graph, then the dot plot which is more linked to the historical data that's in the text. I like this because your knowledge on the topic grows as your explore. The visual is prioritizing the idea that this date is a paid public holiday depending on the state you work in. Being in a state where it is a paid public holiday I didn't know that it wasn't in some states. Using the highlighting text of red technique is prioritizing the idea that the day should be a paid holiday. This is then followed up with the smaller black text saying 'but many still lag behind', which shows the bias of the author that the day should be a paid holiday.

  • Can you describe ways in which data visualizations make information more accessible to their audience? What would you recommend to make key insights in visualizations more digestible to your audience? What would you avoid?
