Leadership in action analysis

Format: Written report

Detailed instructions:

The objective of this assignment is to raise and sustain your awareness of current and dynamic leadership issues.

You will investigate how different traits, behaviours, styles and practices have become associated with leadership and critically examine the efficacy of such claims. You will explore how these portrayals of leadership relate to your learning and leadership theory explored in this course. To do so, you will need to tie the theory covered in this course to everyday world issues relating to leadership.

Step 1: Research and data collection

From the commencement of week 1, you will regularly scan, select, and analyse leadership issues reported on in the media. These can be sourced from multiple media sources, including, but not restricted to newspapers, websites, blogs, podcasts, talks - as long as the level of discussion and analysis can be meaningfully critiqued.

Note: The media items you choose to incorporate into this report should be published within the last two years. This data needs to be collated and presented with its relevance to leadership theory.

In Live Event 1, we review a range of research tactics and strategies that enable you to tackle this assignment with confidence.

Review the following resources for research:

Library Essentials video* - for using Multisearch, Databases, and Google Scholar

The Library reading* - for guides on finding and accessing resources Research guide for business and economics

*from the Global MBA Orientation course > Lesson 3: Set yourself up for success.

Step 2: Leadership issue (problem statement)

A problem is a statement about an area of concern, a condition to be improved upon, a difficulty to be eliminated, or a troubling question that exists in theory or in practice that points to the need for meaningful understanding and deliberate investigation. It should describe an undesirable gap between the current-state level of performance and the desired future-state level of performance and include absolute or relative measures of the problem that qualify or quantify that gap. A great problem statement must be free of causes, solutions, and blame.

In this instance, the problem statement should capture and address the reported:

2a. thematic elements of the leadership issue

2b. its context (strategic, operational, disruptive, innovative, etc)

2c. its reach (team, departmental, organisational, extra-organisational) and

2d. the media descriptions of the leader or leaders.

Step 3: Critical analysis, application, and evaluation

You will then conduct a thorough analysis of three media items (max.) applying the problem statement to real-world contexts and drawing on the content of the course to critically evaluate the efficacy of the claims made.

Report Structure

Problem Statement: Construct a thorough problem statement that summarises 2a, 2b, 2c and 2d - themes, context, reach, descriptive reporting

Critical Analysis: Analyse the problem statement via a number of different theoretical perspectives to enable a multidimensional understanding of the problem

Application: Decide which perspective or perspectives you would apply to the problem, and clearly argue why you think they are the most suitable way to address it

Evaluation: Explain how you would evaluate the efficacy of the solution and what kind of evidence of results you would hope to see to illustrate its success

Audience: Consider this report as a research piece used to support an application to become a global thought leader at major international leadership forums.

There should be clear evidence that you possess the following:

The vision, values, character and competence to shape the future

An ability to balance the polarities between short- and long-term goals.

An ability to understand and navigate complex, dynamic systems
