Ideal Customer, Demographics and Target Marketing

An essential requirement for successful communication is to understand the receiver of your message - your audience. After all, the more you understand another the better you will be able to communicate with him in a way that will achieve your communication goals. In the case of sales and marketing, our goal is to communicate with receivers in such a way that they understand what our offering can do for them and are motivated to buy from us instead of a competitor.

Buyers are diverse. Think about the variety of folks within your social group or in our class and you will see that the buying public is comprised of people with varying ages, languages, incomes, lifestyles and cultures. It is no small task to effectively communicate across a wide array of listening audiences and yet this is precisely what marketing and sales professionals must work to do every day.

This is where the concept of the Ideal Customer (IC) becomes so valuable. Knowing the characteristics of your ideal customer you can tailor your messaging and approach specifically for their needs and listening norms. Using demographic information associated with your ideal customer you can more effectively single out those individuals who will be most receptive to your product and message. If you think about it, spending time and money marketing to those who will have little interest in your product makes little sense. You are much better served by focusing your energy and money communicating with those who will be most motivated to act (buy) upon learning of your offering. This is target marketing.

This module takes a closer look at the ideal customer, demographics and target marketing.
