Good Evening Everyone,
The portion of the video that stuck with me was the increase in productivity if you are in the green zone. This is relatively intuitive; however, with some management's perceptions of leadership, it is usually a more bossy-oriented culture instead of the green zone's collaborative, supportive, and coaching nature. The more outspoken personnel in teams are traditionally seen as higher performers because they usually get more limelight because of the more extroverted personality. Multiple times, I have witnessed these extroverted individuals stifle others around them to be the loudest and only voice in the room. Being the lone voice in the room makes them think they are the most intelligent, qualified, or respected. A healthy environment where learning and collaboration are supported will outlast and outperform a team of toxic individuals, which manifests unhealthy traits exhibited by the team members.
I enjoyed this TED talk's "Manage your own defensiveness" portion. I have never put two and two together, that my defensiveness quickly puts out any hope for a collaborative environment. A light went off because that answer is very accurate, but it is overlooked. It is mentioned that the less defensive you are, the more collaboration the people around you are open to. I would take that one step further and say the more you openly communicate what makes you feel that way and why you feel that way, it would make you appear authentic to your team and that they would humanize you. They will look at you as one of them if you admit your mistakes, point out what it was you were getting insecure about, apologize to them, and then end it with an acknowledgment of them most likely being proper or correct about whatever it was that made you feel insecure and defensive. This was one of the more applicable Ted talks I have listened to. I enjoyed the "self-help" steps he gave to help curb our defensive tendencies and build trust with our leadership, subordinates, and peers.
