I am coming to you for some important tax advice, and I am hoping you can help me. I heard that you were very prompt at replying to your clients! My partner Murray and I are now separated and on May 1 of 2023, and we signed a separation agreement that calls for Murray to pay me $1,200 per month in child support. I currently have custody of our three children. Murray is also obligated to pay me $2,100 per month in spousal support. Both payments were to start on June 1 of 2023. It is now November, and Murray has told me this was the last payment he was making for the tax year 2023. This is concerning, because he hasn't been paying me the full amount each month. The total payments I have received from Murray this year total only $9,500 for child support and spousal support combined. We have been on great terms, so there is no doubt that he will catch up the payments in the new year, however, Murray is expecting to deduct the full $9,500 on his tax return, which means I will have to include this amount in my income. I am not happy about this at all. How should I treat this in my tax return? I don't want to stir the pot with Murray as we have been quite amicable. But I also don't want to screw up my tax return just to save face with my ex. I Thanks for any information that you can provide.
