In 2001, the most visible copyright infringement suit was that of the music publishing association against Napster, which claims merely to be a clearinghouse by which members can share music. The music publishers, however, claimed that Napster was flagrantly violating the copyright protection of the composers and publishers and were able to shut the file-sharing business down by enjoining Napster from much of its activity.
