For some behaviours, athering data moving forward may not give enough data points. You may go back in history to gather baseline data points. You will need to provide documents to support support the data. This might be weekly photos of meter reads, weekly waste audits, etc. Benchmarks come from a wide diversity of sources. We have many sources, from city billing information to Stats Canada to sustainability websites. If you are having any issues, the library staff can support you in researching this part of the discoveryprocess. The restriction on benchmarks is that they need to be Canadian, academic source, and recent.
