I do not believe this law should be repealed and I do not see it as an infringement on the 1st amendment. An entity established as a non-profit has declared itself a vehicle for the good of all society. If the organization has a passionate desire to participate in partisan politics then it should establish itself as such and relinquish the tax benefits afforded to the non-profit designation. Similar to the practice of the Queen of England to remain neutral in politics, a non-profit organization should seek to work with all political leaders to solve the problems facing our communities regardless of political party affiliation (Oram, 2020). Historically, non-profit organization have contributed tremendously to our country's greatest triumphs over injustice (Penna, 2018). These wins include ending slavery, election reform, child labor, women's suffrage, and anti-world war efforts.

I volunteered with Voto Latino Foundation during the 2020 Presidential participating in text campaigns. Our mission was to provide support in voter registration and encourage voters to participate in the election, we were explicitly instructed to never advocate for a specific candidate (Get Involved with Voto Latino, 2021). It was important for the constituents we were speaking with to know that our intent was not to steer them towards or away from a specific candidate or party but to fulfill our mission and provide Latino voters with the resources needed to vote in the election.

Rather than fighting for the ability to support a candidate financially, non-profits should be focusing on their advocacy objectives and remain nonpartisan (Reardon, 2017). The current state of our country is extremely divisive and polarized on a variety of topics. I challenge non-profits to make notable efforts to unite our communities, preach tolerance of different views, and welcome politicians of all ideologies into their organizations. What could be more powerful than a non-profit creating and nurturing a space where two people on opposite ends of a social issue can speak openly and respectfully? At the end of the day we all want the same things, a roof over our heads, food on our tables, dignified work, and our family's well-being. Our political views tend to differ in how we get there but the destination is all the same.
