Question 3
Making a career choice is a defining phase in every students life. Students have to consider several factors before arriving at a decision. Individuals who are misfits in their workplace tend to be less productive and efficient, and therefore are unable to achieve their goals. A lecturer would like to conduct a research to see the significant factors which influence the choice of career among private universities management students in Klang Valley Malaysia.
Respond to the following research design questions.
i. What would be the nature of the study - Exploratory, descriptive, correlational,
or causal study? Justify. (3 marks)
The nature of this study would likely be exploratory because the lecturer wants to discover the important factors that influence students' career choices. This kind of study is used when not much is known yet about the problem.
ii. What would be the extent of researcher interference? Justify. (3 marks)
There would probably be minimal interference from the researcher. This means the lecturer would not change or control the environment of the students; they would just observe or ask questions.
iii. Would it be a Field study, Lab experiment or Field expe
riment? Justify. (3 marks)
It would be a field study because the research would happen in the real world (in this case, the university), not in a controlled lab setting.
iv. Would it be a longitudinal or cross-sectional study? Justify. (3 marks)
This would likely be a cross-sectional study because it sounds like the lecturer wants to look at the factors at one point in time, rather than seeing how things change over a longer period.
v. What would be the unit of analysis? Justify. (3 marks)
The unit of analysis would be the individual students at the private universities because the lecturer is interested in each student's choice about their career.
vi. Identify THREE (3) types of analysis that can be used to analyse the results. (6 marks)
1.Descriptive Analysis - to describe the basic features of the data in the study.
2.Correlational Analysis - to see if there is a relationship between different factors and career choices.
3.Regression Analysis - to understand the strength and direction of the relationship between the influencing factors and the career choices.
vii. Identify FOUR (4) possible factors that may influence the career choice. (4 marks)
1.Personal Interests - what the students like to do.
2.Job Market Trends - what jobs are available or popular.
3.Family Expectations - what the students' families want for them.
4.Financial Factors - how much money they want to make or the cost of education.
