I found this question/answer out on Course Hero, but I was hoping someone could provide me some more information why this scenario below is considered a prediction and not a inference scenario.

c) Stanford received 42,000 undergraduate applications in the year 2014. The application

includes the following data for each applicant: age, high school GPA, scores in the SAT Critical

Reading, SAT Math and SAT Writing exams, and whether they are domestic or international. The

university wishes to understand the different subtypes of students

in the application pool.

Solution: This is a case of unsupervised learning. There is no response variable and just a set of

predictors ex. Here we are trying to find group of samples which behave similarly.

Here we are trying to predict something. N=42000 and P=6 (age, high school GPA, scores in the

SAT Critical Reading, SAT Math and SAT Writing exams, and whether they are domestic

or international)
