Introduction - Major Speaking Assignment 1 a Hook - In highschool, the only thing people care about is if you're \"in or not\" 0 0 List of stereotypical cliques - jocks, preppies, ne arts fanatics, stoners, math geeks, etc. What mattered r Popular vs. not popular = Bullies vs. the bullied 0 Background, Description 0 Eighth Grade, Lunch Period Molly, Sabrina, Brittany (stereotypically) r bullies, my friends I Description of their character, quality of friendship I l was scared of becoming \"not cool\" and getting bullied I Scared of Losing 'iends, getting kicked out of the group I was talking with a group of people and they were making fun of this girl named Taylor for the way she looked, and how she acted. I Taylor - had a lisp, glasses, braces, acne, \"nerd\" > victim I I went along with it, and even laughed with them. I was too scared to say something. I thought if I did, they would start making lm of me too, and stop hanging out with me. I I was just trying to t in. I was not friends with the nicest people, I just wanted to be cool, because if you weren't semi-cool, you could be bullied or made fun of . Thesis Statement - I wish I would've said "Hey, knock it off, that's not okay. We all have insecurities.Imagine if someone made fun of your biggest one, it would probably really hurt your feelings, and damage your self esteem, so let's not pick on Taylor anymore." I wish I would've said that because of the (1) impact it would've had on the victim, Taylor, (2) the damage it had on my self image, and (3) the ability to influence change in the bullies. Body - . Main Point 1 - Impact it would've had on the victim, Taylor o Topic Sentence - Bullying really affects the victims. o Evidence 1 - (Stats) Consequences of Bullying Depression, anxiety, suicide, self harm, low self esteem, agression, violence, alcohol and/or drug abuse o Evidence 2 - (Personal) I have been bullied for my looks too many times Effects it had on me (most of above) May never know the effects it had on Taylor, but it did o I could've helped curve the thoughts of self confidence in this girl for the better. o Could've actively chosen to stop being friends with them, and sat next to that girl, and start a conversation with her, start a friendship o Transition to Point 2 - It didn't just affect Taylor in many ways, it affected me . Main Point 2 - The damage it had on my self image o Topic Sentence - It really damaged my self image, and what I thought of myselfo Might sound selsh, but I'll never forget how I acted on Evidence 1 - I've always hated myself for the outside, so it matters how I think of my character I Why I hate my outside I To think I bullied, knowing how much it hurts just to t in, I'll never forgive myself 0 Evidence 2 - Growing up as an activist I Situation might have inuenced that I Feel like a hypocrite for telling people to stand up, when I haven't sometimes I But I'm trying to make up for it Marches, Ralles, Events (BLM, LGBTQ) Got a scholarship for starting a GSA at my school Awareness Speaking out in other situations 0 'Ii'ansition to Point 3 - I have the ability to make change, and maybe if I'd said something to my friends at the time, I could've really changed the outcome. 0 Main Point 3 - The ability to inuence change in the bullies 0 Topic Sentence - I had the ability to inuence change in my friends, who were bullying. Evidence 1 - Empathy - putting them in her shoes, talking about insecurities, change their minds o Evidence 2 - Making an appeal to pathos, sparking emotion through empathy, and asking why they are bullying Psychology Today, and Better Help.org - People bully B/C of their own insecurities, unhappiness and/or struggles at home, lack love/attention from parents o Transition to Conclusion - I could've helped every person in the situation Conclusion - . Restate Thesis - If I would've told my friends to knock it off, and to put themselves in Taylors shoes, I could've really stopped my friends from bullying anyone again, helped me think positively of my self image, and create better confidence and self esteem in the victim, Taylor. Wrap Up - The best way to end bullying, teasing, and discrimination is through kindness, communication, and creating empathy/sympathy in the aggressors minds, and doing so in a loving and sympathetic light. . Clincher - 1 out of 5 children report being bullied, every bystander in an encounter has the ability to make that statistic just one less. Every single encounter counts. Even mine
