Context Scenario - How Microsoft optimized its processes and unified its teams

After being named CEO in February 2014, Satya Nadella undertook a major restructuring of the tech giant to eliminate its destructive internal competition. Microsoft products and platforms would no longer exist as separate groups. Instead, all employees would start focusing on a limited set of common goals and bringing them all together. Their new common functions include:

Reinventing productivity and business processes

Building an intelligent cloud platform

Creating more personal computing

In September 2016, Nadella created a new AI and Research Group by merging their original research group with the Bing, Cortana, and Information Platform teams. This move brought roughly 5,000 engineers and computer scientists together to focus on artificial innovation across all Microsoft product lines.

A new, meaningful mission

Right at the beginning, Nadella shared a new sense of mission with his employees: "To empower every person and every organisation on the planet to achieve more." He also recalled his thought process: "Over the past year, we've challenged ourselves to think about our core mission, our soul what would be lost if we disappeared... We also asked ourselves, what culture do we want to foster that will enable us to achieve these goals?"

Prior to the restructuring, employees had been lacking a positive sense of purpose, with the result being low morale and weakened employee engagement. And thanks to Nadella's initiative, all Microsoft's employees are following a common goal that brings real meaning to their work.

As of today, Microsoft's restructuring is still in progress. But its future still looks brighter perhaps even brighter than ever as a result of its new, well-established mission.

Important business laws: The Consumer Rights Act

Under the Consumer Rights Act, you have certain obligations when selling goods to consumers. In short, anything you sell (including digital goods) must:

Be of satisfactory quality

Be fit for purpose

Match the description

Be installed correctly (if relevant).

Transactions

The Consumer Rights Act refers to 'traders'. You're a trader if you're self-employed, a limited company, a charity or some other individual or organisation.

The law applies when a transaction takes place and the consumer and trader form a contract. This doesn't need to be in writing.

Should the goods not be up to scratch, the consumer has a timeframe in which to reject them. It's normally 30 days.

If they do reject the goods, you must refund the consumer inside 14 days. You might want to ask for proof of purchase, although that doesn't need to be a receipt. If the 30-day period has lapsed, you're still obliged to offer repair or replacement if the complaint comes within six months of the transaction.

Make sure the repair or replacement doesn't cost the consumer anything and do the deed within a 'reasonable' timeframe. If repair or replacement isn't possible, consumers can ask for further repairs or replacements, a refund, or a price reduction. The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations

These laws give consumers a 14-day 'cooling-off period' for distance contracts. This isn't just web sales it covers doorstep sales too. In this time, customers can cancel for any reason and be refunded.

Policies and Procedures at Microsoft

Values

Microsoft designed its principles and procedures on the set of values the board claims for the company overall and for the staff therein employed. Microsoft believes in honesty and integrity, in being respectful with others while encouraging growth and improvement, in having a passion for customer technological needs and desires, and in being accountable to not only the customers but also to the staff and investors. Microsoft believes in dreaming big and following through on those dreams while still maintaining a critical eye on the company's actions.

Standards of Business Conduct

Microsoft operates under its self-devised Standards of Business Conduct which derives from the company values. Although the Standards of Business Conduct are fairly extensive, the document clearly states that it does not and cannot include specific information for every possible contingency but rather should serve as a guidepost in decision-making for the staff.

Regulatory Compliance

It is Microsoft policy to maintain accurate and up-to-date knowledge of the laws and regulations that govern the corporation worldwide. If at any time a member of the staff becomes aware of a violation of regulation or law it is the employee's responsibility to report the violation to either Human Resources, management, the Director of Compliance, Law and Corporate Affairs or the Business Conduct Line.

Lobbying

While adhering to federal laws regarding lobbying, Microsoft protects shareholder interests by actively lobbying for any issues in Congress that may affect the direction or future of the company

Export Policy

The United States government restricts the exportation of certain technology including software and hardware. Microsoft complies with this policy in order to help protect national security and to conserve limited resources. Fair Information Practices

Aware of its role in the communication industry, it is Microsoft policy to produce and maintain an online environment that is safe for Internet users. Included in this policy is an educational initiative to better help consumers use the Internet wisely. Diversity

It is Microsoft's belief that a diverse workplace increases the successful recruitment of talented staff members who will prove to be an asset to the company. Therefore, Microsoft actively strives towards diversity while complying with Equal Opportunity regulations.
