The term psychological empowerment describes how the intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy of people are influenced by leadership behavior, job characteristics, organization structure, and their own needs and values.

In this week's PowerPoint, you will find "Guidelines for Empowering", and it identifies the techniques by which an effective leader/manager can delegate responsibilities to a subordinate in ways which will "empower" that individual to feel important and valued for their contributions and work. "The term psychological empowerment describes how the intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy of people are influenced by leadership behavior, job characteristics, organization structure, and their own needs and values". Thus, in concept, if you empower subordinates effectively in the delegation process, you allow them to to feel greater self-efficacy, as well as inner desire to succeed, be effective, and compel them to continue to contribute at a higher level. What you will be doing for the first part of the exercise is 1) considering all of the guidelines listed in the table, and then 2) taking the hypothetical situation ("A.F." is your subordinate) to 3) tell me how you would usefully empower the subordinate to engage effectively in the delegated task. You may compose your answer as a process of steps that you would take, or you may write a narrative or a dialogue. I give you full creative liberty to express your answer to this in any way that you are comfortable with. There is no minimum/maximum length or word requirement. The second part of the assignment deals with the process of engaging subordinates in order to correct performance deficiencies. In this segment, you are to consider the methods by which you could address a problem with the results of a task which you delegated to a subordinate. This time you will consider "Guidelines for Correcting Performance Deficiencies", and you will take the scenario that the hypothetical work that "A.F" did in the previously delegated situation is revealing itself to be unsatisfactory. What you will be doing in the second part of the exercise is explaining how to effectively handle this with the subordinate, given the guidelines suggested in the table.
