CITF 260 - SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND DESIGN - VIRTUAL SECTION

This assignment is intended to give you experience in the process of interviewing, including the following:
planning in advance of the interview
conducting the interview
writing up and documenting the interview
The following procedures are required as part of this assignment.
1 Arrange an interview with someone knowledgeable in the systems development process in a company operating a computer system (small, medium or large-scale). This person should be either the IT (Information Technology) Manager, Systems Manager, or an experienced Systems Analyst employed in the systems development section of a computer, data processing, or information technology department. The interviewee should not be someone with whom you have day-to-day contact, and should also not be a relative.
2 Before the interview, develop interview questions in advance, using the 5 assigned questions in this hand-out and at least 4additional thought-provoking questions developed by you.
3 Conduct the interview.
3 Prepare a written report of the interview. Your report should have a title page showing your name - and the name, job title and business address of the interviewee. Subsequent pages must have adequate margins (approximately one inch on top, bottom and sides). Your report should; a) begin with an executive summary of the interview discussing points of interest, b) contain a detail section which lists questions you asked and a summary of the interviewees responses (in your own words), c) an appendix that contains a copy of your follow-up letter described in below, and any other important information, graphs, charts, etc. Your report should be a minimum of 4 pages (excluding the copy of your follow-up letter). A Dropbox will be posted for you to place your report into.
3 As a matter of courtesy and professionalism, send a follow-up letter of thanks after the interview is completed. Be sure you have obtained and carefully noted the interviewees name, job title and business address during the interview. The letter must be typed in a proper business format with a copy of this letter in your report.
GRADING CRITERIA
This interview is worth 40 points as follows:
20 points - Quality and completeness of the written report
20 points - Quality of questions used in interview and overall success and effectiveness
of the interview

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
The following questions should be included in the questions you plan to ask the person being interviewed. These questions should not be the only questions asked. You are to develop additional questions to assist you in finding out additional facts about the data processing/information technology department. You may also wish to ask questions spontaneously during the interview to follow-up on something the interviewee states.
1 How is the Data Processing/Information Technology department in your company organized and structured? Where does it fit in the overall company organization?
2 Does your company follow a formal Systems Development Life Cycle methodology in the systems development process? If yes - would you be willing to share a copy of this development life cycle? If no - what then is used to instruct programmers about the content of programming assignments?
3 How are employees selected at your company to perform systems functions? (i.e. hired from the outside, trained within the company, etc.).
4 What do you consider the most important characteristics for a systems analyst to have?
5 How does your company establish priorities for new systems projects from all the requests made by user departments?
Additionally, you must develop four additional pertinent questions dealing with information you would like to find out about the IT department, company, job requirements, etc.
6. What advice would you give an individual just starting out in this area of expertise?
7. What is a typical work day like for you?
8. How would you describe the relationships between the IT department and other deaprtments?
9. What type of training have you had for this career and did you find any training difficult?
