Introduction

Supply chain management is crucial for a successful business, and it is a complex system that both small and big organizations use. According to the case study, "The supply chain is the sequence of activities and processes required to bring a product from its raw state to the finished goods sold to the consumer" ( Business Case Studies. (n.d.)). The case study provides a lot of information about why big corporations need a good supply chain as it is a complicated system; however, the business relies on it. This paper will analyze the nestle supply chain case study, its elements, research methods, and how it is relevant in Amazon's supply chain research.

Elements of the case study

The case study explains the different parties involved in the supply chain, from growers to the retail stores, how they get the final product gets to the customer.

Growers: Coffee plant grows in areas where their specific temperature usually warm and humid, Growers then grow the plants, Harvest the coffee cherries.

Intermediaries: They buy the coffee from the farmers and sell it to the processors.

Processors: Some farmers dry the coffee cherries, dry and sort them themselves if they have the equipment, and some processors buy the coffee cherries and process them only.

Government agencies: Government agencies buy the coffee from the processors to sell in an auction for export.

Exporters: Exporters buy coffee from the exporters and sell them in foreign markets.

Dealers and brokers: they supply the coffee beans to the rosters at a price acceptable to both sellers and buyers.

Roasters: these are the companies like nestle who are experts in turning green coffee into drinkable products.

Retailers: They are the ones who carry the product in their stores and sell it to the consumer.

The main issue raised in the case study is that the price should be fair and that the farmers who are the coffee growers get their fair share. One way to do it is to leave the intermediaries out and buy directly from the growers. The coffee price depends on supply and demand. However, there are some ways growers can get more money for the coffee, such as producing a higher quality coffee bean, process the beans themselves, and sell directly to the manufacturers. There are other ways, however; ultimately, the market price is the deciding factor of how much farmers get for their product. Nestle is one of the world's largest companies that buy a large percentage of coffee directly from the growers.

Whereas Amazon aims to provide the consumers best price and make sure sellers who use Amazon to sell their products make profits. Sellers have two options they can sell their products directly or use Amazon's fulfillment centers where the company does the sorting packaging and delivering the products to the consumers (Johnson, 2020). To ensure that the orders fulfillment on time, they use projected demand forecasting tools to know how much inventory they need on hand, and this is done by using data from glance views and sales history (Johnson, 2020).

Methods of research

According to business research methodology, three types of research methods are used in case studies explanatory, descriptive, and exploratory. In the nestle case study explanatory method, the case study answers the why and how questions with little control over the occurrence of events (Case Studies - Research-Methodology. (n.d.)). The case study provides details about the process and who is involved in Nestle's supply chain management.

Appropriateness of case study

The case study is suitable for Amazon's supply chain management because Amazon wants consumers to have quality products at best possible price. Amazon's supply chain includes information and technology, an extensive network of warehouses, an inventory management system, and transportation, and it is considered one of the most efficient supply chain system. Push and pull method is used for orders, push for products that are high in demand in its stores and warehouses closer to the major cities, and pull technique for the third-party sellers using the order by order method of fulfillment (LeBlanc, n.d).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the nestle case study provided an overview of who is involved in the supply chain and discussed how growers could get a fair price. The research method was the explanatory method, and questions like who is involved and how things are done are answered. The Supply chain case study was an excellent tool to understand Amazon's supply chain management and their strategy to ensure when a consumer orders something, it gets to them at the lowest possible price and in the quickest time.
