image text in transcribed Topic Selection: You need to select a finance-related topic for a short paper. Your topic must be preapproved by the instructor. If you have trouble selecting a topic, please contact me. Some examples are: Current developments in finance or major decisions made by firms or investors: o Health care o Dodd-Frank Act o Financial crisis (any of them) or recovery from a financial crisis o A specific merger or takeover: why it did or did not work o Pros and cons of Federal Reserve policies o Pros and cons of holding cash o Project selection o Impact of the financial media o Impact of government regulation Discussion of a practical issue related to one of the class topics o Example 1: You are familiar with a firm having difficulties with their working capital. You could analyze the working capital problems and then suggest solutions to the problem. o Example 2: Your firm is developing a new product. They are trying to determine where to manufacture the product (or how to fund the project). You could analyze the choices and then make a recommendation. o This will require a thorough understanding of the firm and its policies and procedures. Discussion of an academic paper related to one of the class topics o Journal of Applied Corporate Finance and Journal of Applied Finance are two examples of academic journals (There are many others as well). You can also select one of the papers referenced in the slides. o Depending on the topic and the length of the academic paper, an additional non-academic paper may be used as part of the analysis. o Example: Suppose the academic paper looks at the impact of rating agencies during the financial crisis. You could include a Wall Street Journal or Economist piece that discusses the same topic. NOTE: All of these are very broad examples. You need to narrow the focus in picking your topic (You have to cover it in a very short time). For example, instead of looking at health care problems overall, you could focus on one suggestion for improving the situation. Once you make an initial selection, I will provide additional guidance on the topic scope and content. a) Presentation: You need to make a short presentation on your topic. The presentation will cover the main points of the analysis. Comments from the presentation can be used to make changes and improvements before submitting the final paper. The team is expected to use the web conference to ask and answer questions. This is an opportunity to get feedback from the class. Each team will have 15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for Q&A. You must complete the presentation within the time limit. While there is no formal slide limit, you must complete within the 15 minutes. You will be timed and stopped at 15 minutes. b) Submission: The team will submit a final report on the topic. The report should contain data, details, etc. to adequately cover the specifics and details. The maximum length is 10 pages. Any Excel spreadsheets can be submitted separately and do not count towards the 10 page limit.
