Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin co-founded range in motion (RIM) in 1984. Their idea was to create a computer consulting firm for businesses with software issues. In 1988, they developed the first system in North America that would allow wireless payment processors and pagers to seamlessly transmit wireless data- this became the cosmic soup in which the Blackberry brand would evolve (BlackBerry: Complete guide). RIM's specialty was building communication devices like pagers and modems. In 1996, RIM introduced the RIM interactive pager 900, and was one of the world's first two-way pagers and then rebranded themselves as Blackberry (BlackBerry: Complete guide). In 1999, RIM announced a new wireless service in North America that could sync up email accounts on Blackberry devices in real-time. Later in the year, Blackberry introduced the Blackberry 850 series, a line of wireless handheld devices that used the new service to automatically receive emails. In 2002, RIM released its first device that functionally resembled a modern smartphone- the Blackberry 5810 and the following years, RIM grew their line of smartphones (BlackBerry: Complete guide). In 2008, RIM had over thirty percent of the smartphone market and internationally, it was in second place behind Nokia. In the same year, Apple announced the new mobile device called the iphone- it came with a touchscreen and an app platform where third-party developers could sell their apps. The executives thought that the iphone looked like a childish toy with playful features targeted at young users and decided to ignore this. Later on that year, Blackberry released the all touch screen Blackberry Storm, riding of their qwerty keyboard which unleashed a wave of customers who did not like the change (BlackBerry: Complete guide). Earlier this year in January, Blackberry announced that it was decommissioning the operating systems of all its smartphones, meaning that the devices would be discontinued, no longer available to connect to data networks (BlackBerry: Complete guide). One of the downfalls of BlackBerry was its operating system (OS) compared to its competitors Android and Apple. Android phones caught the attention and appeal to the quirky and fun side of users that allowed anyone to customize, providing the users a wide array of fun applications... it is the very first smart phone that is truly comprehensive and open to its users (Prabhat, 2011). Apple has a walled garden which means that iPhones can only run apps that are pre-approved by Apple (Techmonitor, 2016). Just like how Apple and Android have their own App Store, BlackBerry also had its own dedicated App Store, called BlackBerry App World. While the selection of free and paid apps is extensive, chances that ed a that's t it'll he forwhen you hear about the newfangled app that's tending like crazy, it'll be for iphone or Android- with the BlackBerry version "coming soon". The more significant drawback of a BlackBerry is that in order to tap the full potential of the BlackBerry mobile platform, you'll have to have BlackBerry enterprise software installed back at the office (tt.com, n.d.). After looking at all the SDLC models, I believe that the RAD (rapid application development or rapid prototyping model) model would have helped Blackberry excel and succeed with the times and its competitors. RAD is used when developing a software solution that is heavily dependent on the organization's business process and the end users' knowledge and understanding of those processes- the end users can provide better feedback about the system requirements by examining a live system rather than commenting of the associated documentation. RAD is also a type of working model or prototype of the solution that allows the end user to see how various requirements have been implemented as the product is developed (University of Maryland Global Campus, 2021). This model would have benefited BlackBerry had they asked customers for their feedback on the newer phones that they had created to try to compete with Apple and Android along with other changes that they could have improved. In my earlier paragraph as a real example, is that BlackBerry was "late to the game" with their own app store and I think one of the reasons they held themselves to a higher standard was because they were ideal for business transaction and created for the business people in the corporate world.1.
