Guided relaxation and meditation are behavioral techniques that consist of deep breathing, relaxation training, meditation, and other exercises. These types of behavioral techniques can help distract a person from their upsetting thoughts and help an individual control their breathing, their heart rate, and other anxiety symptoms and thoughts that they have (Clevenger, 2022, p.372). Deep breathing can help someone focus on their breathing during relaxation and breathe out their stress with each breath. Suggestive or autogenic relaxation consists of direct verbal suggestions to a person to promote physical relaxation. Suggestive or autogenic relaxation is similar to meditation in that it helps move attention away from distracting, non-relaxing thoughts. It allows a person to focus on the phrases that are said to them, encouraging physical and mental relaxation. Progressive relaxation consists of tensing and relaxing one's muscles. Guided imagery relaxation helps the mind to turn off stressful thoughts and decreases tension in the body. In this, the person closes their eyes and imagines a scene that is appealing and relaxing to them. When they are ready to end their session, they will retrace steps back to the place in the image where they started and count from 10 to 1 before opening their eyes again (Rogel Cancer Center University of Michigan Health, 2024).

These types of behavioral techniques would be appropriate to help Goutam with his overall anxiety. Relaxation, meditation, and breathing techniques can help relax him and put him in a state of calm. Doing these behaviors daily can help put him in a better state of mind to attend his classes, leave his home, and socialize with friends. In addition, ACT can help reduce his anxiety symptoms by helping him understand his relationship with his thoughts, feelings, and emotions and implementing behavior changes with ACT therapy. Other cognitive-behavioral techniques will also have to be incorporated for Goutam to achieve a decrease in anxiety, but these would be beneficial for what he is currently experiencing.
