Title IX is laws and regulations that impact education programs that receive federal funding. These laws protect students and staff members. In the online community we may be less likely to face some of the things these laws address (sexual assualt, discrimination, stalking, etc.). However, it CAN happen. Even in an online classroom, we have the right to feel safe and the responsibility to ensure others feel safe. While students on a physical campus, may be more likely to experience these things, the protections apply to those of us online as well. It is imperative we understand the expectations and protections included within Title IX. We have a responsibility to monitor our own behaviors, and the safety of others. We have the right and responsibility to report behaviors that would impact students or staff members. In the online community, it can be easy to assume these rules do not affect us, or there is no need to be aware of them, but that is false. We should be intentional with our own behavior to ensure we are not violating other's right to a safe learning experience. We should be aware of our rights to a safe learning experience and be aware of how to navigate reporting times we feel we (or others) are not receiving that. Anytime we are in the online classroom, we should treat the experience just as if we were in person and manage our actions, words, and choices in a way that we would do in person.
