The internet router and servers are located here. There are 14 file servers. Each server requires a primary and backup network connection for redundancy. The servers connect using Category 6a cables. There should be redundant switches to permit failover in case the primary server switch fails. Wireless access was not available here previously but should be part of the new design. This will provide wireless access for the small number of network administrators occasionally working in the Main Computer Room. IDF302 - Main Office The Main Office contains 8 administrative offices plus 18 desks for staff (which are in a common area separate from the offices). There are also two adjoining conference rooms that will accommodate 10 people each. (Each conference room should have 4 wired connections.) There is an old Netgear AP here. The Main Office is a one-story structure with no significant interior issues that would affect wireless connectivity IDF303 - History Building There are three classrooms and four offices here. There is an AP already installed here, but it uses WEP. The current AP's firmware cannot be upgraded to use better security IDF315 - English Building Two 3Com hubs and a Lanplex 2500 switch are providing connectivity in this building. There are two classrooms and four offices here. Wireless was not installed here previously but should be part of the new design. IDF393 - Political Science Building The PC in this building is connected to MDF301 using a Cat 6 to Fiber media converter. Currently, the Poli Sci Building only requires connectivity for the instructor offices. However, the network design should plan for a wired PC for each student in each of the three classrooms and appropriate wireless connectivity IDF399 - Library Building The Library Building has a direct MMF trunk to MDF301. There are 26 PCs with Cat 6 connections available for students and visitors to use. There are also 6 desks, used by staff members and 2 offices in this building. Wireless was not installed here previously but should be part of the new design. 3.2.7 Network Protocols The Director of IT for Waycool College has indicated a preference towards open source types of communication, but she is flexible about this if there is a strong business or technical case for using a proprietary solution. 3.2.8 Uplink Oversubscription Based on a previous analysis of traffic flow and bandwidth utilization, we want to have an uplink oversubscription ratio of twelve (12) 1-Gbps switch ports to each 10-Gbps fiber uplink. 3.2.9 Remote Connectivity and Security The customer would like to have a firewall installed in the Main Computer Room that will protect the network and allows secure remote access back to the network for up to 20 users simultaneously. The firewall(s) should be installed in a redundant/failover design, so that if the primary firewall fails, the secondary firewall will still be operational. The customer recognizes that firewalls are expensive, but they are also a critical piece of the network infrastructure. 3.2.10 WAN Connection The College will be connecting to a new high-speed internet backbone connecting all its campuses to the internet. The ISP will provide two 50 Gbps connections to the internet. (Currently, they only have one connection to the internet.) The WAN router is owned and managed by the ISP and is not in the scope of this project.
