You will have to submit one (1) xlsx file and one (1) mpp file. PDF files are NOT accepted. Note there are some notes below indicating things that are "out of scope" for the assignment. Remember, all assignment work must be your own original work, do NOT use images, Excel, MPP or other files, or data from any other source including other students, your files have to be 100% completely original, your own work. You will be taking the work you did in your previous assignment (save a copy first), modifying it in a newer mpp file, and creating an xlsx file. A major objective in this assignment is to make sure the project and activity durations in your mpp file match the project and activity durations in your xlsx - and they meet the project duration requirement. An iterative process is required to achieve this. You will need to use the same WBS hierarchy requirements as the previous assignment. Another objective is to understand the relationship in our mpp files between PERT (O, M, P and skewing), durations, work, and %Units. For example, we may think an activity only needs one person a half day to complete so based on 8 hours a day that's 4 hours of work and a 4 hour duration. But we don't want to use half day durations, they are not always practical. If we had activity A set at 0.5 days, and a successor B activity of 0.5 days our mpp file would show both would be completed in a day. But what if the worker for A showed up in the afternoon, activity B couldn't be done until the next day, so we sometimes use minimum 1-day durations and durations in integers (e.g. 1, 4, 7, 23 days). Create a worksheet in your xlsx file and name it "WBS Data Dictionary". Note the OMP durations are skewed with the duration between P-M greater than M-O, make sure your estimates have this skewing. To keep things simple, only have one human resource working on an activity and make your human resources in your Resource Sheet set up with Max Units at 100%, which means they're working 8 hours a day. Max Units of 25% means a worker can only work 25% of 8 hours a day, or 2 hours per day. Note, make sure you don't have any overallocations. You'll need to create a Data Dictionary (this is an unusual one for learning purposes). Use the diagram to set up your worksheet for all your activities. Assume that the duration estimates you used in the last assignment were "most likely" M estimates. For example, let's say for a task called Level Property, you initially used your M estimate of 3 days for the time and amount of work for a single worker to get the activity done working 8 hours a work day. This means there are 24 hours of work for this activity. You then decided to use PERT and consulted with some experts to get an O and P estimate (which were skewed), and your PERT calculated to 3.33. B you do NOT want to round down, you're only going to RoundUp so you don't squeeze your durations. So your Revised PERT is 4 days, which means the 24 hours of work will be spread over 4 days rather than 3. If we leave the labourer assigned to the task at 100% units we'll end up with 32 hours of work. Instead we want the labourer assigned 6 hours of work per day so that 6hrs X 4 days = 24 hours of work. Given the labourer was originally assigned 100% units and is available 8 hours a day, you could now use 75% units to get 6 hours of work per day. You'll need formulas in columns G and H, and J through to M. Note an example for the formula for H is provided in the image below using the Excel formula for RoundUp (NOT a Round). Note in the diagram below at the bottom right, you need 2 totals for your work hours. At least 5 of your activities have to end up with a PERT duration that is longer than your M duration. To keep things simple, only use FS relationships in this assignment and use the PERT durations you created in your data dictionary for all your Gantt charts in your xls and mpp files. But if you find your project is too long for the assignment duration provided in the previous assignment, which you have to meet for this assignment, you can fast-track some of your activities. But remember fast tracking is when we apply a lead (not a lag) to a successor task so that it partially overlaps with the predecessor task. It does NOT mean they are completely in parallel or they start at the same time. Create 2 Gantt worksheets, name the first worksheet "Simple Gantt", this chart will show Gantt bars and the date of each day, and you only need a WBS Code column, Activity Name column, Duration column, shaded weekend days, and blue Gantt bars. No Deliverables, no milestones, no critical path. This would be suitable for distribution to stakeholders who want some limited information on the schedule of the project. Your 2nd Gantt worksheet will have more information, name your worksheet "Medium Complexity Gantt". In addition to the simple Gantt chart requirements, you'll need a Duration column, Deliverables (WP's to be in yellow), milestones, and the critical path via a red border your critical activities in red. See diagram below for an example of part of a medium complexity Gantt Chart. Enter at least 5 human resource roles (not people's names) in your mpp Resource Sheet, labour rates are NOT required for this assignment, nor are any material resources. All activities will require a human resource assigned to it. Revise your mpp file Gantt Chart durations and your xlsx Gantt Charts to match your PERT durations you created in your xlsx data dictionary. Make sure you have a WBS column, a Work Column, and Start and Finish columns. Colour your Task Names blue for activities and WP's yellow (just WP's yellow, not higher level deliverables). You will need to add 3 milestones to your mpp file, but do NOT use one at the end of the project as your finish activity at the end of the project also serves as a project completion activity (which is a de facto milestone) and needs a duration of at least 1 day. Make sure you have a FS between any milestone and the previous activity, but also make sure the previous activity has an arrow leading to the successor activity. Make sure your project start dates and end dates match in your Excel Gantts and your mpp Gantt. You don NOT need any costs in this assignment. You do NOT have to use any reserves anywhere in this assignment, no Contingency Reserve numbers, no Management Reserve numbers and no Activity Contingency Reserve numbers. You do NOT have to ensure that your project costs match the budget you were provided in the last assignment, we are focused on time and durations in this assignment. Maintain the requirements from the last assignment, such as: Activities coloured in light blue and your WP's in yellow, number of paths, single start activity and a single finish activity. Don't "orphan" any of your activities -- i.e. the finish end of all activities (the right hand end of your activity on your Gantt chart) should have an arrow leading to a successor activity to continue the path. At least one critical path from start task to end task visible via red activities (use the Format tab and then select the check box called Critical Task).
