S312: Military Briefings

Presenting a Decision Briefing

Decision Briefing Assignment

Note: You will conduct this assessment at least two days after the first hour of S312.

You have been assigned to a new unit as the new Platoon Sergeant. Your Commander and First Sergeant have just informed you that the unit is deploying to Ariana in 12 months. You are responsible for preparing your platoon/section for deployment to said country.

The last report from the replacing unit stated that the Area of Operations (AO) would be in a heavily wooded area which includes a remote airfield. Due to the size of the opposing forces in the AO, it is possible that the location could be compromised and will require the reestablishment of the CP in a different location. Your primary mission is to pre101121pare your platoon/section for the following tasks:

Perform Downed Aircraft Recovery Missions (01-CO-8066)

Install Aviation Tactical Equipment (011-15P-1090)

Perform Aircraft Battle Damage Assessment and Repair (BDAR) (01-CO-8065 )

The Commander has directed the platoon/section sergeants to develop two Courses of Action (COA). One COA on how the platoons/sections will be trained to carry out the tasks minimizing the operational risk, and the other COA accepting reasonable risk to accomplish the mission. Your COAs need to be analyzed in order for the best COA to be presented to the Commander. The Commander will be expecting you to present your rationale for selecting the COA that you recommend.

As you prepare your platoon/section, the Commander wants you to take into consideration the following points in your COAs:

You have 15 Soldiers and five NCOs, and seven of those 15 Soldiers have less than 12 months in the Army.

The AO is a hostile environment; familiarization with the Overview of Ariana's Military Forces will be important, along with familiarity with said Forces' Size & Structure, Doctrine & Tactics, Training & Readiness, Equipment & Weapons, and the Physical Environment. All of this information is available on the ODIN website (ODIN-OE Data Integration Network army.mil.

You will need to visit https://rdl.train.army.mil/catalog/dashboard for further information regarding your tasks.

One of your COAs should address minimizing the operational risk and the other COA has to address accepting reasonable risk to accomplish the mission.

Refer to ATP 3-04.1, FM 6-0, Central Army Registry (CAR), and ODIN websites to assist you in developing your COAs.

When finished prepare a 10 minute (plus or minus 1 minutes) decision briefing (IAW FM 6-0) for your commander. Provide a slide presentation with your briefing covering the three main parts of the decision briefing.
