Unifor (Canadas largest private sector union) was offi cially formed on August 31, 2013, through a merger of two of Canadas most influential unionsCanadian Auto Workers union (CAW) and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP).47 In 2016, Unifors asset base was worth $297 million, with liabili ties worth $36 million. It also brought in $121 million in revenue and had $117 million in expenses.48 Upon inception, Unifor aimed to represent vulner able, lowwage workers. Unifor established Community Chapters as a new way to reach contingent workers (e.g., freelance, parttime, and contract). Through these com munity chapters, individuals or groups can join Unifor and gain access to health and dental plans as well as group home and auto insurance, and can gain political representation from Unifors leadership as well as rank and file workers.
