For this exercise, you are serving in the role of Project Manager (and not just the role of Risk Manager). For the purposes of this assignment, you may assume you served as the Project Manager for the Denver International Airport (DIA) project if you need to supplement your planning with relevant examples.

The Project Champion has asked you to develop a planning memorandum for the Post-Project Review. The risk management post-project is expected to be an element of your Post-Project Review. The Project Champion provided you with multiple sources to consider in planning your Post-Project Review (embedded in this module). Your Project Champion expects you to include at least one element in your Post-Project Review from each provided source.

Your memorandum contains three major sections:

Section 1: Planning the Post-Project Review

Section 2: Conducting the Post-Project Review (must include the risk management post-project review as a part of the overall Post-Project Review).

Section 3: Distribution and Implementation of Lessons Learned

Your Project Champion has provided you with considerable leeway in how you will plan and conduct the Post-Project Review process. As you are a new project manager with the team, your Project Champion is allowing you to create the process as you determine as the most efficient and beneficial to the organization.

The Project Champion asks your memorandum meet the following requirements:

1. Professional memorandum format

The Illyas, Hassan, and Illyas (2014) article provides excellent supporting information for planning (Section 1) and the review itself (Section 2). Do not get "lost in the weeds" with this article, but focus on what is beneficial related to the memorandum. The After Action Review source is also an excellent planning resource for all three phases of the memorandum.

Do not focus on "perfection." The intent is to demonstrate your ability to plan a review event.

Your memorandum contains three major sections:

Section 1: Planning the Post-Project Review

  • Who should be invited?
  • Who is leading the review (facilitator)?
  • What organizational or cultural considerations might you include?
  • What is a brief overview of the project under review?
  • What would you include on the agenda (i.e., develop a schedule. Utilize the Hillson text as a reference).
  • What is the intent of your Post-Project Review (e.g., examine success and failings, traces causes, and effects, recommendations for change).

Section 2: Conducting the Post-Project Review (must include the risk management post-project review as a part of the overall Post-Project Review).

  • Rely on Chapter 12 of Hillson as the primary resource for Section 2; however, you may supplement with additional information.

Section 3: Distribution and Implementation of Lessons Learned

  • How will you distribute the Post-Project Review results?
  • What information will you include in the distribution?
  • Who do you include in the distribution. (Hint: Who are the DIA project stakeholders you identified in an earlier assignment)?
