Address the following questions:

  1. Describe your leadership style?

The leadership style needed to get team members on the same page and to find a common ground amongst two employees who cannot work together is a transformational leadership style. This style attempts to build a unity within the group by developing bonds between coworkers. This style emphasizes change and promoting and exposing employee potential. Leaders who use this style want employees under their supervision to achieve more as a team.

This type of leadership can be effective in organizations that are looking to make changes and promote better team building.

  1. How does your leadership style affect your response to resolving an issue?
As a transformational leader, not only would I focus on the two employee's rebuilding a bond, but I would help improve their communications skills by proposing a common ground that both employees can agree on. My leadership style includes focusing on change and ensuring the two employees know that change, adapting, and accepting other employee's point of view are necessary for the success of the company. My team would know that my current focus is ensuring that my employees know that their supervisors listen to them and consider their opinions as well as positively addressing any issues one may have, even the issue involves another team member.

  1. What are some leadership strategies that would work best to aid with employee communication?
Some leadership strategies that may help with employee communication include being transparent with my team members. With transparency, this gives no room for employees to guess or assume, which in return helps with communication between team members. To improve employee communication, I would hold daily team meetings each morning so that every employee is aware of any current situations that may need to be addressed. I would also promote employee communication by encouraging employees to work together based on their common interests to achieve a common goal. Actively listening and being engaged is another great leadership strategy to assist with employee communication. When employers actually listen to their employees and are engaged with what their current issue are and how they can be resolved, employees are more likely to appreciate the communication efforts and will motivate employees to communicate more effectively with each other.

As a leader, its important to get my team members on the same page, and disagreeing to the point of disruption is unacceptable. As a leader, it's my responsibility to find a common ground for team members to be on the same page where they are able to communicate appropriately and effectively. Employee's are entitled to disagreements, but its important to them to express themselves, then move past the disagreement. It may be a good idea to speak with the two employees' separately, deliberate on the issue, then speak with them together to find a common ground.

Scenario 2: Lower wages

Address the following questions:

  1. Explain how you would handle this situation.
I would handle this situation by retrieving both team members employee files and carefully reviewing them to determine if any errors were made. I would review each file to look for tardiness, absences and any documented late or incomplete work turned in. I would then compare the files. If the female staff member who had a complaint is right, and has less tarties, absences and or late or incomplete work, then she is correct, and her complaint is valid. Therefore, the female employee should receive a pay increase as well. The type of leadership style is participative. It requires us as leaders to be diverse and inclusive. We must demonstrate good communication skills while holding ourselves responsible for our actions.

  1. How could this situation have been handled differently and improved?
This situation could've been handled differently by taking preventative measures to ensure that doesn't feel this way again. The male counterpart's annual evaluation should've been reviewed thoroughly. If his evaluation did reflect multiple tardies, absences and late or incomplete work, that employee should not have received a raise. I would have also looked at the totality of circumstances, like if the male employee excelled in sales, production, or team building recently, and what made him deserving of the pay increase, them base my decision off all pertinent information.

  1. In reviewing the team development model, assess what changes, if any, are needed in order to get this team back to performing stage.
A few changes are needed to ensure the team gets back to a performing stage. First, it's important to determine where the team currently stands and how close they are to performing well. Once this is determined, its easier to find out what areas need work. Then a review of the team's progress will help determine how far they've come and what employees will need extra attention. This way, behavior and progress can be modified. Supervisors also need to show empathy while building their employee's trust. This will help with team building which is necessary to ensure the team gets back to their performing stage.

Participative leadership is very common and promotes open communication. It encourages employees to speak out if they have a issue so managers can effectively address employee's issues. This leadership style is important in this scenario because its important to be fair in the workplace. If one employee is performing better than another in the workplace, but there is no reward, there leaves room for doubt and distrust.

Scenario 3: Political Discourse in the Office

  1. What are the risks of allowing this type of group thinking to continue in the workplace?
Although it's common for employees to conversations not related to work, certain topics should be discussed with caution or not be discussed at all. For example, politics is never a good idea to discuss in the workplace. Doing so can reduce group productivity and concentration. If the conversation is always involving politics, the team is distracted and may not complete their tasks due to being consumed by political conversations. Allowing this type of group thinking may also negatively affect the group attitude and in return decrease employee morale and increase stress. Also allowing politics in the workplace may cause tension within the group as well as arguments, overall lowering the productivity of the group.

  1. Discuss how groupthink impacts organizational performance based on the scenario presented?
Group thinking consists of members of your group to make decisions based on the current situation and not taking other opinions into account, but groupthink can also be troublesome for the organization. It's important to allow employees to express their differences of opinion. This can lead to a stronger bond as well as better decision-making. But when politics are involved, bad decisions can be made. The group then lacks creativity and steers toward division, which in return reduces team building.

  1. What are some leadership strategies that can be implemented in order to reduce or eliminate this concern in the workplace?
Some leadership strategies for reducing the concern of discussing politics in the workplace include creating an environment where employees understand the importance of having diverse views. Once this is created, political biases should be avoided make making important decisions. Employers should also ensure employees are aware that although its okay to have different political views, its more important to have factual information and not opinion driven. Providing resources and positive and constructive political dialogue is also important. Although politics in the workplace shouldn't be discussed, the effect of the disagreements can cause a lasting effect on the team members of the organization.

Although it's perfectly fine to have a political opinion, political conversations should not be discussed in the workplace. This can be detrimental to relationships, productivity, performance, and the company's culture. Managers will need to take the initiative to ensure that these conversations are regulated to ensure the protection of each employee from workplace harassment and discrimination. Anyone who is not in agreeance with the discussion of politics in the workplace should be counseled with separately.
