Athelstan commences business as a painter and decorator on the 1st of January 2016; below summary of his transactions for the month of January - Jan 1, Deposited 20,000 cash into the bank as opening capital Jan 2, Purchased sets of specialist brushes for 500 cash {note, this purchase can be regarded as a material item to Athelstan and hekully expects to keep the brushes for several years) Jan 3, Purchased a paint spray gun costing 400 on credit from Cnut Suppliers Ltd Jan 4 Purchased a van for 1,000 cash Jan 5, Purchased stocks of paint for 900 on credit from Norse Paint Supplies Ltd Jan 29, Paid 3 months' rent for workshop and garage space to 31st March, 200 cash Jan 30, Paid in cash takings to bank for small jobs undertaken during the month, 300 Jan 31, Started work painting the Lord Alfred Inn {1-week contract)- agreed credit fee for the job of 800 At this time Athelstan does not keep proper records but has been told by his advisor to maintain a full journal record of all entries prior to the accountant setting up his accounting system.
