Words are layered with different meanings. Even though we are not always aware of our efforts to interpret words, we are always processing meanings. (2016) While there are similarities in the definitions of jargon and slang. They are both used and meant to be interpreted by members of a certain group of people and are very different in the context they are used.

Jargon is more formal specific phrases or words used in a certain profession. Most often, jargon is only used in a specific context or setting. Examples of where you may here jargon is in sports, medicine, law and other professional trades. Jargon is usually meant for interpretation by others in that specific environment.Literary Devices (2018) Unlike jargon, slang is informal phrases and words and is generally used in social groups among peers. Slang can often be identified by geography, age and other similar social groups.

Examples of jargon I might use in my day to day activities are; stat, pre-auth, ARD, RUG and orders. Examples of slang I might use daily is; cram (ing), piece of cake, couch potatoes, for real and busted. The examples I provided add to my communication with peer because of the fast-paced life I live. Often, the abbreviated jargons and slang understood my those receiving the message allows me to say more with less.
