The relationship between employers, managers and employees can be a comfortable one or a very stressful one. In 2014, Benefits Canada published an article reporting that 18% of workers were unsatisfied with their jobs, and 57% were only content with their jobs because of their co-workers. Employees want and need good wages, benefits, safety, a healthy workplace, and stability for a healthy work-life balance. Employers want and need reliable, trained, efficient, loyal, productive, and satisfied employees. Some employers have grown to understand how to treat employees, but unfortunately, this is not the case for all employers. When there is an imbalance in the relationship, a union - a group that advocates for employees to their employers for fair treatment regarding pay, job security and working conditions- is called to assist. Unionized firms are more efficiently managed than non-unionized ones because of the undeniable knowledge that employees receive fair terms of employment, and because employers are less likely to lose an employee. There are advantages to both the employers and employees of a unionized firm. Advantages for the employee: Higher wages - the union ensures fair wages according to the market Greater equality - the benefits are given to all according to the norm. Pension/Benefits - they are available to employees Job security/Tenure - employee safety allows employees to remain employed and happy at work. Advantages to employers: Well-trained staff - the union trains employees, which creates a more efficient, safer workplace. Stable workforce - Employees are more likely full-time and work for the employer for a long time. Predictable cost - negotiation for everyone together as opposed to each employee separately. Less turnover - employees stay for long as they are content at work. Employers cannot run a business without employees. Ensuring the employees' happiness is key to a well-managed firm.
