I recently had the opportunity to interview a parent of a child who is receiving special education services. This interview was enlightening and allowed me to gain valuable information to consider when working with students and their families. For this assignment, I received verbal consent from the parent and informed them their personal information would remain anonymous. I will refer to the parent as Ms. Thomas, and the student's name is Julie. Thus, the interview was completed face-to-face, and the student was not present during the interview. Julie has a medical diagnosis of cerebral palsy and needs assistance with her everyday living skills as she is paralyzed on her right side and uses a power wheelchair for mobility. During the interview, I learned that Ms. Thomas is the primary caretaker of Julie. Her father is not involved in Julie's life. I asked Ms. Thomas to tell me about when she learned of Julie's medical diagnosis. She stated it was noticeable when Julie was not hitting developmental milestones according to her age. Once she learned of the official diagnosis, Ms. Thomas stated she had "mixed feelings" about it. This part of the conversation allowed me to think about how most parents feel when they first learn their child has a physical or intellectual disability. It can be emotional to think about how their child may need additional support throughout their life and the challenges the child will face in the future. Finish this... it has to be 3 pages.
