(i) Samples: Each member of the group will chose one unknown alloy. Accurately weigh out 0.2g of alloy into a 100mL beaker. In a fumehood add (via micropipette) 1.8mL conc. hydrochloric acid followed by 0.6mL conc. nitric acid. Heat on steam-bath if necessary to initiate reaction. Once dissolved, dilute to 20mL with Milli- Q water and filter through a funnel with a glass wool plug directly into a 100mL volumetric flask. For all dilutions use the Milli- Q water provided Prepare final working samples by diluting 1mL of this solution +1mL conc. nitric acid to 50mL. (ii) Standards: Prepare a multi-element stock solution by pipetting the appropriate amount of 1000 ppm metal standards into a 50mL volumetric flask and making up to volume with Milli-Q. Pipette 0,0.25,0.5,1,2,3.5 and 5mL stock solution into 10mL volumetric flasks. Add 0.5mL conc. nitric acid to each flask and make up to volume with Milli-Q. Pre-lab exercise Calculate the concentration of each metal in all 6 standards and the blank and complete the table below. (iii) Measurements: Transfer each standard and sample into the provided plastic tubes and place each tube into the appropriate position in the auto sampler. Once analysis is complete use the provided results to calculate wt \% composition of each metal and identify the unknown alloys. A list of available alloys and their composition will be available on LEARN to aid in identification of the alloys
