The reason I chose Apple is that it's such a huge company and almost everyone in the U.S. purchases some form of their products so I thought it would be interesting to compare its ethics to the large number of people buying its products. I would give Apple an F for ethics. This is due to poor working conditions such as health and safety risks, child labor, poor environmental reporting, contribution to e-waste, and tax avoidance, all of these violate their own code of ethics. After the Fair Labor Association investigated Apple's suppliers they found that there were "excessive overtime and problems with overtime compensation; several health and safety risks; and crucial communication gaps that have led to a widespread sense of unsafe working conditions among workers ", this completely violates their "Labor and Human Rights and Environmental Protection in the Supply Chain" code. Apple operates in the electronics/devices industry. Good ethical behavior can be difficult in this industry because electronics utilize so many different parts/components that there's a huge number of suppliers providing parts just to manufacture one product, due to this it's hard to monitor every single supplier's ethical behavior and even then, you can't change their rules, you can maybe drop them and get a new supplier but the cost might be higher and that'll cut into your profit margins. Some external factors/concerns would revolve around the intensive factory labor used to manufacture apple products. Another concern would be the discussion about how smartphones and AirPods (wireless earbuds) emit radiation and can potentially lead to cancer. Honestly, in terms of how Apple's ethics influence my option to purchase their products, I would have to say that it doesn't really bother me. For one, I'm pretty sure all smartphone manufacturers are going through similar ethical dilemmas and on top of that, the health concerns wouldn't change if I switch the product and ultimately, I don't want to give up having a smartphone because it's very useful in my daily life.
