QUESTION 2
To improve octane numbers in gasoline butane can be reacted with butene in a liquid phase reaction.
Under the right conditions the following reaction takes place
C4H10+C4H8C8H18, desired
However, butene can also react with itself to form unwanted material in a chain reaction. The first step of
this reaction is shown below;
C4H8+C4H8C8H16
unwanted
These reaction can be represented as
A+BR,rR=k1CACB
B+BS,rS=k2CB2
a. This reaction is carried out in a liquid phase mixed reactor (CSTR) which has a residence time of 1.0min
using an equimolar feed of A and B(CA0=CB0=1moll). The product stream contained 0.4moll of A
and 0.2moll of B. Determine the rate constants for these reactions.
b. Using the rate constants determined in (a), design a CSTR which must process 1000Imin of equimolar
feed (CA0=CB0=10moll) such that the composition of B in the product stream is 0.5moll. What are
the compositions of all the other components in the product stream.
c. Using the rate constants determined in (a) determine the maximum conversion of A that can be
achieved in a plug flow reactor (PFR) with CA0=CB0=10moll. What are the compositions of the other
components under these conditions.
d. Using the rate constants determined in (a) determine the maximum conversion of A that can be
achieved in a CSTR with CA0=CB0=10moll. What are the composition of the other components under
these conditions. What is the size of the CSTR.
