An intuitive way to frame this search for tier $1$ concerns is to state a gap in terms of what Clayton Christensen and colleagues call the "job to be done." $8$ With an understanding of the "job" for which customers want to "hire" a product or service, founders can more accurately develop solutions tailored to what customers are already trying to do$.$ For example, no one needs an automated pressure cooker $($a product$/$solution$),$ but busy, time$-$constrained people do need a way to prepare food faster and with less mess $($the job to be done$).$ No one needs a staircase $($a product$/$solution$)$; they need a safe and efficient way to reach the second floor $($the job to be done$).$

Action: Let us try something interactive to get the ideas flowing and to put some of the concepts we have discussed into practice. State three distinct ideas as jobs to be done that are distinct and pressing enough $($tier $1)$ on their own to be considered a reason for starting a new business. That is$,$ do not try to come up with a single business that tackles three jobs; that would be too much for a single, early$-$stage business. Instead, come up with three significant jobs that you think need to be tackled by a business you would be willing to put together. Match each job to a type of customer who you think might pay for it to get done. For instance, the customer for the automated pressure cooker I mentioned previously might be a busy parent. Try to balance being both detailed and straightforward in your descriptions so that even people not familiar with industry jargon or who are hearing about the idea for the first time could easily understand what you are talking about. Remember: if you are having trouble coming up with three jobs to be done, try asking a friend or a stranger to serve as a sounding board for your ideas.
