Despite the generally low reactivity of the noble gases, xenon forms a number of stable compounds in combination with fluorine. One particularly interesting compound is octafluoroxenate, [XeF8], whose structure was first reported in 1971 (Science 1971, 173, 1238). The unusual structure of this dianion exhibits a rare, square antiprismatic geometry with eight fluorine atoms surrounding the central xenon atom. In the schematic below, consider the shaded sphere to be the central xenon atom and the numbered spheres the surrounding fluorine atoms. Fluorines 1-4 comprise a square whose plane is parallel to the square formed by 5-8. top view a) Determine the point group of [XeF8] and find the appropriate character table and list all possible symmetry operations for the molecule (there should be 16). You do not need to copy the table into your answers. Character tables can be found in the appendices of the suggested textbook for the class or online (e.g. at http://symmetry.jacobs-university.de/). b) For each class of symmetry operations in the character table, show the effect of performing one of the operations. Renumber the fluorine atoms and indicate the symmetry operation over the arrow. As an example, the identity operation is shown below. Below the example is a template that can be copied and modified to label the atom. Alternatively, you can provide your own hand-drawn version. top view top y view
