*CASE STUY OF: Orlando, Bobby, and Nate.

Orlando, Bobby, and Nate are three young brothers who have been placed in foster care while their mother receives inpatient psychiatric treatment and their father participates in individual counseling. Their mother, Helena ("Lena"), had struggled with mental illness for some time but only recently stopped taking medication, which led to increased hallucinations and delusions. Their father, Jake, had often been verbally and physically aggressive with the children and Lena. While the children were at school one day, Lena attempted suicide. The children returned home and found their mom unresponsive. The oldest, Nate, called 911.

The foster parents have noticed different behavioral adaptations to the trauma the brothers have witnessed.

*Orlando, 5, has gotten in several physical fights with other children at school and, on one occasion, a foster parent observed him kick the family dog, who was "in my way."

Bobby, 8, often spends a lot of time in the bedroom by himself and withdraws from social interaction. When called on at school, he responds with wide eyes and becomes panicked. He has started to bite his nails and pick at the skin around them.

Nate, 10, will not go anywhere without his school-provided tablet. He has become absorbed in a video game called Ninja Warrior, playing it often when not in school. When adults have tried to engage him, he only talks about the world of the game and how his character is doing.
