IE 521: Principles of Engineering Management 1 Case Study #3 Team Formation Requirements: Modern organizations rely on teams to tackle the significant and complex tasks that cannot easily or effectively be managed by a single individual. To be successful we must understand the impact that team design, launch, and management can have on the success of a teams efforts. This assignment allows your team to explore the many facets of teamwork in the context of this course and establish the guidelines, expectations, and measures you will use to evaluate your teams performance and growth throughout the semester. During the semester, teams will engage in a variety of activities, including discussions and case study projects. Teams should ideally consist of 4 students; however, adjustments may be made based upon course enrollments. Group assignments will require teams to work collaboratively to critically evaluate case scenarios, develop solutions and insights, and prepare the necessary submission materials. Additionally, each team is required to provide a brief review of a case study once during the semester. Throughout the semester, individual team members will also be asked to assess team performance and individual team member contributions. Results may impact individual grades. Deliverables: This assignment requires the following 1. Identify a set of teammates who agree to work together on all group assignments for the course. Team members are expected to equally contribute to the assignment tasks, debate potential courses of actions, and the preparation of assignment submissions. Once your teams enrollment has been defined you should collectively work to develop the following: a. A team name b. A team vision or purpose statement that describes your teams shared identity c. Briefly describe the diversity of your group, each individuals unique strengths and backgrounds and how these factors will contribute to your groups success. d. Discuss and document the norms and expectations for your group and its members. This discussion should focus on behavioral norms, communication expectations, and division of work responsibilities, among other topics determined by your team. e. How your team will ensure that there are more process gains than losses (approximate length 1 paragraph for each gain/loss or 1 page total) i. Specifically consider 3 process gains or losses described in Table A of the Leadership and Teaming document and develop a plan for how you will minimize losses and maximize the corresponding gain. Offer at least 3 specific measures or metrics that can be used as well as their interpretation. Measures should reflect your teams purposes/vision statement as well as the norms and expectations that have been established. Note: Future assignment(s) will ask individual team members to apply these measures to assess your team so it is important to have a carefully prepared, comprehensive set of measures to which everyone agrees.
