For my class I need to describe an experiment. Here are my components:
Question/Problem: How does phone/blue light exposure affect quality of sleep?
Hypothesis: If phone usage is stopped 3 hours prior to sleep, then quality of sleep will improve as melatonin production will be adequately distributed, as well as adequately reaching REM sleep stages, ensuring enough rest and replenishing the body overnight.
Procedure: To carry out this experiment, I would conduct a study based on two groups of people. Each group would have 5 people in it. There would be one person in their early twenties, early thirties, early forties, early fifties, and early sixties. All of which have described scrolling through their phones/looking at their screen before sleeping.
I ensured that my groups were representative of different age groups and people of different life experiences by including one person from each age group (20s,30s,40s,50s,60s).
Group A would go to bed as they usually do, using their phone beforehand.
Group B would put down their phones 3 hours beforehand, maybe opting for a book or nothing at all before bed.
Participants will be randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group using a lottery method, where names are picked out of a hat (all names written and put into hat only once).
Control group = Group A
Experimental group = Group B
During their sleep, I would conduct an overnight study in a sleep lab for all subjects. There would be sensors to monitor the heart, lung, and brain activity. Arm and leg movements, vocalizations, and blood-oxygen levels would also be monitored. An EEG would be conducted using electrodes to pick up brainwave signals being sent. This would all be done in order to see if the participant reaches REM sleep.
Materials: Sensors to monitor bodily functions (Heart, lung, brain, arm and leg movements, vocalizations, blood-oxygen levels), EEG using electrodes to the head
