Imagine a scenario where a group of students within the Y2K network seeks to connect to the
internet. Lets assume these students generate requests of around 0.01 MB on average and
they send out about 90 requests per second to the internet servers from the Y2K network.
Now, theres a crucial link, the bottleneck access link, connecting the Y2K network to the
internet servers, which can transmit data at a rate of 1 MB/s. Assume that there is no other
traffic within or outside of the institutional network, and the queuing delay at the bottleneck
link dominates (i.e, neglect all other delays at other links or nodes). Answer the following
questions: (Your answer should be in milliseconds rounded upto two decimal points)
(a) What is the average access time it takes for a student at Y2K campus to
access the webserver? Consider the queuing delay as 1
1\alpha ms, where \alpha represents the
traffic intensity i.e, the ratio of incoming traffic to outgoing traffic.
(b) In an attempt to reduce the average access time, you proposed to the Y2K IT
director to enhance the transmission rate of the bottleneck link to 5 MB/s. What would
be the average access time for a student at Y2K campus to access the webserver in
this scenario?
(c) Lets say your proposed solution of increasing the transmission rate wasnt
feasible due to increased costs. After reconsideration, you suggest another approach:
incorporating a web cache server on the campus. Assuming an 80% cache hit rate for
all requests, what would be the average access time for a student at Y2K campus to
access the webserver?
