For some families, this cost can reach up to 30% of monthly income. Since most energy for homes is provided by some combination of state and local governments, the US Department of Energy developed a tool called the Low-income Energy Affordability Tool (LEAD) to help government entities provide energy more efficiently to the benefit of both the climate and to the financial benefit of consumers in the most of need of it. This tool provides visualizations and data around the times of the year, day and the locations where energy is being used. Since excess energy is wasted, this provides a chance for stakeholders of these various entities to create more efficient plans to divert energy where it is needed and thus reduce costs for all. This information regarding both energy and consumer patterns helped those in need across various states in towns such as in CT where overall usage was decreased to the benefit of their energy costs and climate action plans. In Long Island, NY the ultility provider National Grid was able to use this data and identify 45,000 households that qualified for its assistance program which had not previously received the benefits.
