In 2020 the whole world had a virus lockdown, and students had to switch to remote learning. How effective was remote learning on children ages 5-11? Over 55 million students in the US were affected by the shift to remote learning(Mostafavi, 2022). This sparked lots of debate between parents and teachers. Some parents thought remote learning was going to be good for student's, while others thought otherwise. Some may say remote learning allows children to work at there own pace, others wonder how much it can effect children's behavioral and socialization skills. Can remote learning be harmful to children's academic abilities? Remote learning may not be as effective as some think and this is for multiple reasons.

You may be able to see how challenging the switch from in person learning to remote learning was for families. According to the National Library of Medicine (Autism Dev Disord 2022) students who were already performing well in regular classrooms continued to do well when switched to remote learning. While other vulnerable students who were struggling with education were highly impacted. Children with developmental disorders are more vulnerable for a negative outcome because of remote learning. This categorized children who had a harder time with communication, social, or motor skills. A change of environment will definitely affect the way a child learns and comprehends. Not only were students switching to remote learning, but also parents and guardians who had to switch to remote jobs or were laid off in result of the pandemic. This caused them to be at home with there child. Some of those parents were able to assist and help aid teachers with the school work, but there were a handful of parents/guardians who were unable to be there to assist there child with school work. For example a parent may be more hands on as opposed to a parent who had to work from home. Research shows that children perform better in there academic performance if there parents are involved in there education at home ( Autism Dev Disord 2022.)

Children not receiving in person instructions and changes of environment have presented psychosocial stressors to children and parents that increased the risk to mental health and well being, in effect making it worse for education. Per NIH (Verlenden 2019) When a child is not receiving a lecture in a classroom they tend to experience an increase of negative mental, emotional or physical health outcomes. Risks were worse in students receiving virtual instructions than students in person. In 2020 the Center of Disease Control investigated the differences on children's experiences and well being according to there methods of receiving information regarding their education. Data used from the COVID Experiences nationwide survey, dates between October 8-November 13, 2020. 1,290 parents of children ages 5-12 were surveyed. 45.7% reported that there child receives virtual instructions, 30.9% were in person, and 23.4% were combined. 11 out of 17 parents stressed the well being, as well as concerns of mental health, physical activity and emotional stress were worse in children receiving virtual or combined instructions (Verlenden, 2019)This may cause parents to ask for additional support to help maintain there children's emotions.

About 59.5% of children receiving remote instructions showed more hyperactivity, peer problems, behavioral difficulties. and were less interested in school work compared to those who attend school in person. Teachers and families should be more considerate of how much it will affect for a student to get back into in person teaching.

In conclusion, remote learning is not as effective for students who may have learning disabilities, if parents are not involed in school work. This will cause lots of health and mental health issues for not just the children but eventually the guardians as well if the proper precautions are not taken.
