in 2-3 sentences: When I was in college I worked for a small grocery chain. When I took my application in (by hand because that is how we still did things then) I was asked a few questions on the spot then told that I would be called for an interview after my references were contacted. I walked out confused because this was not my first job (I worked retail and public child care as well) and it seemed like they were doing things a little out of order. In my previous experiences it went like this: application--> interview --> contact references. My references were in fact contacted and I was called for an interview with the department supervisor. She let me know that she would talk to the store manager and I would be called for a 2nd interview if he wanted to meet with me... a 2nd interview? For a grocery store position?! I got the call from him and again went in for another interview. He did not waste time addressing the reason for his hiring process.
