Background: You are part of Exxon Mobils finance team. Given your good work on previous projects, the Chief Communications Officer requested that you help the company in rebuilding its brand by focusing on its employees around the globe. (Hint: the audience = the employees). Earlier this week, it came to the Chief Communications Officers attention that the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and other news outlets published a series of stories alleging that the company concealed climate change issues. Now, the negative press is affecting the companys overall reputation.
Following this news, it was further acknowledged that current employees are incredibly unhappy becausenot onlydid they learn that the company lied, and concealed climate change issues, but now a lot of employees have to suffer the consequences, such as job cuts, around the globe. Employees recently voiced their concerns saying that they have not heard from the companys senior leaders who were once respected, and trusted. Some employees who have worked at the company for 35-40 years were laid off too because of the blow to Exxons reputation.
The problem is, your current employees are scared and nervous, they are starting to apply for other positions outside of the company as they think Exxons finances have been impacted by the negative news. Nervousness is contagious and you need to calm your current employee base by letting them know that you have a plan in placeand initiatives to help the company address climate change issues.
