In a non-insulated combustion chamber a car engine burns high octane fuel. C8H18 (liq.) is mixed and burned with 100% excess air. C8H18 (liq.) enters the chamber at a constant rate of 10kg/hour and at a temperature of 25C, while the air flows in steadily at 17C. The combustion gases exit at 1500K. The equation for the combustion process is: C8H18(liq.)+25(O2+3.76N2)8CO2+9H2O+12.5O2+94N2 The air and the combustion products can be assumed to behave as ideal gases (hence, h=h(T) ). Kinetic and potential energies are negligible. Use the property tables provided. a) Draw a simple sketch of this process, annotating the following on the sketch: i) the boundaries of the control volume (combustion chamber); [1] ii) the entering reactants and the exiting products; [2] iii) the direction of the heat transfer between the control volume and the surroundings. [1] b) Verify that the equation provided for the combustion process is balanced by showing the comparison of numbers of atoms of each element on the left and on the right. [4] c) Write the steady-flow energy balance applied to the combustion chamber per unit mole of fuel, as a function of enthalpies of formation and sensible enthalpies. d) Determine the heat transferred from the combustion chamber to the surroundings, per kmol of fuel (in kJ/kmolfuel). [8] e) Determine the rate of heat transfer from the combustion chamber to the surroundings, for the given mass flow rate of fuel (in W). [5] Hint: For C3H8 (liq.), the enthalpy of formation is 249,950kJ/kmol and the sensible enthalpies at the temperatures of interest are nil
