QUESTION: What are some of the pros and cons of Java Expression Language? Discuss.
ANSWER: When discussing the pros and cons of using Java Expression Language (EL), it is important to compare and contrast it with other alternatives, such as standard JSP tags. They both are relatively simple compared to Java programming in that they arent object-oriented in nature. The developer doesnt have to create an instance of a class in order to access certain variables and methods. JSP tags work well for designers that have experience working with HTML and JSP tags. Like JSP tags, EI is also relatively easy to learn and use for front-end developers that know how to use HTML and CSS. The getProperty functionality in EI is straight forward and useful while the getProperty functionality in standard JSP is limited. This is because the developer can only use it to obtain primitive types for the most part. EI developers cant use standard JSP tags too well such as arrays, collections, and hash maps. Other advantages of EI is that it lets you access nested properties while standard JSP dont. In general, it provides more advanced and complex functionality relative to other alternatives. Because of the many advantages, Its no surprise why EL has become such a popular method for pulling information that was entered in order to process it and then display the results.
